SCHOOL SPORTS LAUNCH: TEACHERS LEFT OUT OF THE CONVERSATION

On 5 August 2025, the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, together with the Ministry of Sports, officially launched the long-awaited return of school sports in Lobatse. While stakeholders agree that the revival was overdue, the decision to integrate it within the standard 8-hour workday has sparked frustration, confusion, and outright rejection from educators.

According to the Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Ms. Nono Kgafela Mokoka, the integration model was chosen due to budget constraints. Yet for teachers — the very people expected to implement this — the decision is impractical and unfair. Since the suspension of school sports in 2019, Botswana has seen a decline in athletes across sporting codes, but educators argue that sports cannot thrive when squeezed between overloaded teaching schedules.
